Dungeons & Dragons
Enter the world of D&D and fall in love...
I’ve decided to use today’s post to write about my favourite hobby: Dungeons and Dragons. There is just so much about it that I love that I definitely couldn’t put it all in one post. (Well, maybe I could, but I’m just going to talk about the main thing I like). Which is: character building!
I know, shocking for a writer.
I decided to write this post because I bought myself some dice for my birthday. I bought dice with owls inside to be my DM dice and dice with pirate ships inside to be a set for a specific character which I finally created!
Her name is Stormi Sunsong. She’s a halfling bard, backstory: pirate. There’s even a home brew Bard College called the College of Revelry. It’s perfect.
Now I just need a campaign to play her in.
Here’s a blurb of her backstory.
It’s been 25 years since my town was razed. I was a wee one at the time, but I can still remember the flames burning the buildings and the laughter of the bandits as they set the town ablaze. I ran into the woods that were my haven even then, ducking in holes the bandits wouldn’t be able to squeeze through. I ran until I couldn’t anymore, tears streaming down my face. I lost my parents early in the raid; watched them get cut down across the courtyard by a bandit on a horse.
I don’t like the colour red.
I wandered, then, looking for anyone that would help me. I don’t know how long it took me to get through the woods, but on the other side was a beach. Sand stretched on either side of me and the deep blue ocean spread before me. It was a beautiful scene but not what I was looking for.
I picked a direction and started walking. The sand was soft beneath my feet and the sun was hot as it beat down. Would I survive out here?
I did, obviously, as I’m here to write this now.
I found a small village on the shore, the docks bigger than the city itself. I was a mess, by then. My clothes felt like rags hanging off my body and I’m sure I was sunburnt. I probably looked like a monster. But I found a kind hearted soul that took me in: Brick. At least, that’s what everyone calls him. He isn’t the brightest out there but definitely the nicest dwarf I’ve ever met.
He’s the first mate of the Salty Dogs; knows how to keep the crew going while the captain charts the course. Everyone on the ship loves him and it’s by a miracle that I was taken in by the Salty Dogs.
Brick said it was something in my eyes.
Whatever it was, I’m thankful. And though the Salty Dogs have been disbanded—something about retirement—I’m lucky it was them that found me.
Hopefully my next crew will be just as great.
There’s the blurb! What did you think? She’s pretty cool, eh? Can’t wait to try out my new dice and see how this bard plays out!
Cheers,
Taralyn

Have you ever tried solo TTRPGs? I have personally never tried one, so grain of salt, but I have heard nothing but good things. Many boil down to 1) create a character 2) navigate them through a series of prompts. Mostly writing, but I have heard some have loose systems to help you decide what happens, and sometimes ask you to draw.
Hell yeah!! I love this. Making characters for DnD is one of the best parts, seriously. It's a funny thing as a writer for sure, since we make characters all the time (or they show up out of nowhere, fucking freeloaders) but something about DnD's clear structure makes it feel like a game in and of itself. I've been thinking more and more about how much I'd love to DM sometime - maybe one day I'll write a campaign where Stormi can find a home :)
