Thoughts
Enjoy the random thoughts that entered my brain today...
I’ve started and deleted this post many times over the last couple of days, unsure of what to write. So, I’ve decided it’s going to be a random thought dump! Whatever comes to mind! So enjoy the randomness.
I’m attending a writing workshop on the 19th. A virtual one, of course (I’m much too introverted to go to an in person one), but I’m hoping it’ll reignite the spark I had for my writing a few weeks ago. I want to write and yet I stare at the screen, angry that words haven’t magically appeared while I’ve been working.
It’s a sad reality.
The workshop sounds fun, though it’s a long one. 2 ½ hours. I don’t know if I’ve ever participated in one that long. (The ones with my special writing group are different). It’s not like my work is being critiqued or even read; it’s a workshop where someone will talk and give me tools to help me write. And while that sounds enjoyable, my attention span ain’t that long. We’ll see if I end up getting bored. (Hopefully I don’t).
Speaking of attention span, the one thing I can focus on for long periods of time is my writing. Of course, my muse has to show up too, but the times that it does, I can write for hours!
Do I get a lot done? How dare you ask that question! That’s a different matter entirely!
For instance, the other day (last week?) I ended up writing over 2000 words in one sitting. That made me feel good! It’s rare that those days happen and when they do, you’ve gotta celebrate! And what better way than a drink! At least for me, anyway. For you, it could be chocolate, snuggles with your cat, a drive to see the stars, whatever you want! Just don’t forget to celebrate. You deserve it!
Writing is something I enjoy and I hope that you reading this do too. After all, most of my posts will be about writing!
I know! I’ll end this with a snippet from the first chapter of my novel I’m editing and going to submit to a contest in September. Enjoy!
The Hydra was packed, as per usual, but silence hung in the air. Denham watched out of the corner of his eyes as a woman walked towards the door. She was wearing dark clothing, a hood covering her hair, a sword strapped across her back, and a dagger visible on her belt. She was given a wide berth by the patrons in the tavern, eyes warily following her as she headed to the exit.
“It’s bad luck to take a woman aboard a ship, Captain,” Rhyder, the first mate, whispered. Even from his spot at the bar, waiting for the bartender to pour his ale, Denham could hear the smooth voice of his comrade. But it was one of his many talents, overhearing conversation. Other whispers came from the back of the tavern, but Denham dismissed them. Though apparently the woman was gorgeous.
“We haven’t a choice, Rhyder. The money she’s paying us will set us up until we get another job,” the Captain answered, his voice just as low.
Denham kept his eyes on the woman as she exited the tavern. Seeing someone carrying that many weapons, at least visibly, was unusual in this part of Shipwreck Sanctuary. The tavern went back to its usual loud, boisterous laughter after the door banged shut behind the woman. The bartender finished filling the tankards for him and the two at the table, her eyes still staring at the closed doors.
Denham dropped the silver coins on the bar, picked up the tankards, and gave a smile to the bartender when she finally looked his way. She gave a shaky one back, and Denham could see her hands shaking slightly too from the stress. She must be new. Denham hoped he portrayed a comforting smile before he turned around to make his way back to the Captain and Rhyder.
Hope you liked the sneak peek!
Cheers,
Taralyn

I'm late commenting to this! How was the writing workshop?? Any particular good tidbits? And I know the feeling on muse... I once wrote a poem about the closest thing I could appropriate mine to being, aside from just a fickle sense of motivation. Staring at a page, or even just doing other things and THINKING about staring at a page... I think it's a common thing for writers to struggle with.
Thank you for the sneak peak! Sometimes muses are tricky and refuse to listen, but that is because they are gathering those pesky ideas. So next time it shows up, be ready for it!
