I’ve spent a few days trying to figure out what to use Substack for. I find that when I start a blog, I run out of ideas and fast. But perhaps I’m just overthinking things. I do tend to do that. So, I’ve decided, a thought dump or journal dump; whatever you want to call it. That’s what this will be.
If you like it, stick around. Things will be all over the place. Probably.
Let’s start things off with what I write.
I write fantasy. Anything fantasy. I’ve got adventure, romance, urban, fairy tale; I love the magic, the sword fights, the freedom. I create worlds, draw maps, and create these crazy journeys to take characters on. It’s what I love to do. It’s practically what I live for.
My writing process is also pretty par for the course. (At least from the writer’s I know). I have multiple works in progress. Right now, I’ve 7 novels in the works. 3 of them are in the editing stages, so that’s something! (Woo) But the other 4, are in various stages of being written. I think the longest is in the 40k range, while the rest are closer to 10k. I’ll finish them one day.
One day.
That was my motto for the longest time, but I’ve been trying to take a more active approach to my writing life. It’s what I want to do for the rest of my life.
Writing is my passion. It’s why I got my Creative Writing degree from Vancouver Island University. It’s why I agonize over whether the first sentence (like I’m doing now) is powerful enough to hook readers.
One day I’ll share it with you; the line I’m agonizing over, but it’s not this day.
Speaking of first lines, if you have any suggestions, comments, tips, tricks, etc., PLEASE let me know. I swear, this is taking up all my thought process (and making me unable to continue editing the chapter).
Well, there’s a short little introduction to me and my writing. Maybe next time will be more into what else I do besides writing. We’ll see.
Cheers,
Taralyn
My suggestion for first lines:
Write a bunch of them, throw them in a box, give a shake and put it on a shelf. Come back in a few days/weeks and open the box. Sometimes you'll find that one line shredded the others, other times they've merged into one long strip. It's a coin flip really. You can dissect whatever's left over, or discard for something else.
excited to follow!
